A Day Such As This,

DVD, Amman version

A Middle East version of the film “A Day Such As This” (Amsterdam version) recorded pupils of Taekwondoclub Al Shabab when they open their curtains (or shutters) in their homes in Amman, Jordan.

The concept is humble, yet allows accidental things to happen and generates a richness in images: 30 children, 30 curtains and 30 framed views on a small part of Jabal al-Hussein, one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city.

The accompanying music is a song of Bill Withers, he sings “When I look at you, I know it’s gonna be a Lovely Day”, an optimistic welcome of a new day.
As we watch the film we could imagine we are standing behind the child, looking outside over his shoulder. We could imagine the parents are singing, looking at their child, lovingly.

The film was part of exhibition “Truth is black, write over it with a mirage’s light”, the 30 year anniversary celebration of artcenter Darat al Funun, a superb 1920 complex in Venetian Mediterranean style and pioneering platform dedicated to placing contemporary art at the heart of Jordan’s cultural life.
